Apologies for belated news but I've not been back long from my stay in Kenya with the children, I'm still catching up! It has been an eventful 5 months to say the least. They all seem to have gone down with malaria, chest infections one after the other over what has been their winter months. I'm pleased to say they are all fighting fit again now. I left just as summer was beginning and temperatures are now much more conducive to better health.
We have had a steady flow of volunteers visiting throughout the summer and the children have delighted in the extra company and attention they have received. (pic attached of 3 with our girls). Groups of students have also benefited from their African experience in our traditional village. Helping with our FEED500 programme has been a high light for most although quite emotional seeing the state of the orphans for the first time. For me they look much improved as our feeding programme has been running for 18 months now and I can see the difference in the children from when we started. We are still £200 short each month but miraculously the maize and beans has stretched and we've not had to turn anyone away yet.
Last month we celebrated the official opening of our Activity Centre. Children from School sang and recited poems and the ladies from Church prepared some mandazi, half cakes and juice for us all....traditional African fayre! We look forward to welcoming more 6th Form, University students, Church and Youth Groups next year to our Hostel accommodation in the heart of Utange. Being so close to Casuarina House means the children are able to visit after tea for songs around the camp fire and games with everyone. This has proved especially enjoyable for both children and the students.(picture attached)
We are currently planning for our Charity Spring Ball and mini auction on March 16th at The Sharnbrook Hotel in Beds. Tickets have remained at £40 per person and I would be pleased to hear from anyone who would like to come with friends to make a table of 8 /10. As well as being a fun night with delicious meal, music and dancing, it helps us raise much needed funds to keep Casuarina House and FEED500 running.
We are also thinking about our annual trip to Kenya next November. This includes volunteering in Utange, a safari and stay in the beautiful Severin Sea Lodge beach hotel. A varied holiday and a chance to experience the real Africa. Take a look at what to expect from the video that was made by a couple that visited this year: https://vimeo.com/54932096 Please contact me if you are interested in joining us and I will email details.
As Christmas approaches and we reflect over another year I am amazed we have still been able to keep going. Battling against the current climate along with the drought in Africa, resulting in food costs escalating. We've seen our FEED500 programme double in cost. Food at Casuarina has meant a meal of just potatoes at times rather than meat and potatoes for the children. We do what we can with the budget we have.
We have launched a Christmas Appeal this year which I have attached for your perusal. If you know anyone interested in giving a small gift for the children this Christmas please pass on. Every penny we receive goes to the children and makes a difference. If not then please ignore.
Many thanks for your help.
From the orphans in Utange and from the team here in U K we wish you a very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year.
